Extra Protection Where It Matters
Fragile items are the most common casualties of a move. Our trained packers wrap and cushion each piece individually, using purpose-made cartons, dividers and plenty of padding, and label boxes clearly so they’re handled with care throughout.
For especially valuable or awkward pieces, we offer custom crating and specialist antiques handling. Need everything packed? See our full packing service.

Why Move With Wolves Removals for Fragile Packing?
We’re a friendly, family-run Sussex removals and storage company that has been keeping its promises since 2016. From a single item to a full home or office move, every job is fully insured and led by a dedicated coordinator, so you always have one point of contact.
As a LAPADA member and a Checkatrade-verified team, we handle it all with real care — expert packing, home and business removals, clean, secure storage and specialist antiques handling across Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Kent.

The Science Behind Professional Fragile Packing
Fragile packing is far more than wrapping an item in newspaper and hoping for the best. The forces that damage delicate possessions during a move are predictable and physical — vibration through the vehicle floor, sudden shocks when a vehicle brakes or turns, point loads where a heavy object presses against a thin edge, and crush pressure when boxes are stacked. A glass tumbler does not usually break because someone drops it; it breaks because two pieces of glass touch and rub together under vibration for forty miles, or because nothing inside the carton stops the contents shifting. Our team packs to neutralise each of these forces individually. Every fragile item is cushioned so it cannot move, separated from its neighbours so it cannot make contact, and surrounded by enough material to absorb impact before that impact ever reaches the surface of the object. This is the principle that separates a properly packed carton from a box of breakages waiting to happen, and it is why a thoughtful approach to our full packing service consistently delivers items intact across Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and beyond.
As a LAPADA member, Wolves Removals brings a level of care normally reserved for the fine-art and antiques trade to everyday household fragiles. We treat your grandmother’s china and your everyday wine glasses with the same discipline, because the physics of breakage do not care how much an item cost.

Materials We Use — And Why Each One Matters
The right material in the right place is what makes fragile packing reliable. We carry a full range of professional-grade supplies rather than improvising, and each one has a specific job. Newsprint and offcuts of cheap paper transfer ink onto china and provide almost no cushioning, which is one of the most common reasons home-packed boxes disappoint. Our packers reach instead for purpose-made products that have been engineered for protection.
- Acid-free tissue — the first layer against gilded china, silverware and lacquered surfaces, because ordinary paper can mark or tarnish delicate finishes over time.
- Large-bubble and small-bubble wrap — large bubble for shock absorption around lamps and ornaments, small bubble for snug, contour-hugging protection on intricate pieces.
- Dish packs and glass packs — double-walled cartons with cardboard cell dividers that give every plate or glass its own compartment so nothing touches.
- Picture and mirror cartons — flat, telescopic boxes that adjust to the exact size of a frame and protect the vulnerable corners and glass face.
- Foam corner protectors and edge guards — for framed art, mirrors and screens where the corners take the load.
- Layered packing paper and void-fill — to lock contents in place and eliminate the empty space where movement begins.
If you would prefer to pack some rooms yourself, we can supply exactly these materials through our packing materials shop so your fragiles get professional-grade protection even on a DIY move.

How We Pack Glassware, China & Ceramics
Stemmed glassware is among the most failure-prone of all household items because the join between bowl and stem is a natural weak point. We wrap each glass individually, paying particular attention to filling the bowl with soft paper so it cannot implode under pressure, then stand glasses upright — never on their sides — in a cell-divided glass pack. Plates and saucers are wrapped individually and packed on edge rather than stacked flat, because a plate standing vertically can withstand far more vibration than one lying horizontally where its whole face is exposed. Heavier items always go at the bottom of the carton and lighter ones on top, with a generous cushion of crumpled paper above and below every layer.
Ceramics and ornaments with protruding handles, spouts or fine detailing are wrapped so those vulnerable extremities are the most heavily cushioned part of the package. Every fragile carton is filled to the top so the lid presses down on a firm, stable load with no room to shift — an under-filled box is one of the surest ways to crack a dinner service. For anything genuinely irreplaceable, such as period porcelain or studio ceramics, we recommend stepping up to our specialised antiques moving service, where the same techniques are applied with museum-level care.

Mirrors, Pictures, Lamps & Electronics
Flat fragile items demand their own approach. We tape a protective cross or grid across the glass face of mirrors and glazed pictures so that, in the unlikely event the glass were ever stressed, it is held together rather than scattered. Each piece is wrapped, corner-protected and slotted into a telescopic picture carton sized precisely to the frame, then loaded upright on its edge against a firm surface in the van — never laid flat where the centre of the glass can flex.
Lamps are dismantled where possible: shades travel separately in their own cushioned cartons because they crush easily, while bases are wrapped and packed upright with the most delicate finials and fittings protected. Electronics — televisions, audio equipment, computers and consoles — are happiest back in their original boxes, but where those are long gone we use anti-static protection, corner blocks and tailored cartons to guard screens and connectors. For valuable or awkwardly shaped electronics and art, our custom crate service builds a rigid timber case to exact dimensions, giving complete protection for the most demanding items.

Labelling, Loading & Why DIY Fragile Packing Goes Wrong
Packing an item well is only half the job; it has to survive the van and the unload too. Every fragile carton we pack is clearly marked — this side up, fragile, and the room it belongs in — so the crew handles and places it correctly without guesswork. In the vehicle, fragile boxes are loaded last and highest, never crushed beneath heavier furniture, and wedged so they cannot slide during transit. This combination of careful packing and disciplined loading is what turns theory into a damage-free delivery.
DIY fragile packing tends to fail for the same handful of reasons every time: boxes are over-filled and too heavy to lift safely, or under-filled so contents rattle; cheap newspaper provides no cushioning and stains china; flat-packed supermarket boxes lack the wall strength to resist crushing; and items are stacked rather than separated. We see the results of these mistakes regularly, and almost all of them are avoidable. If you only want help with the breakables, we can pack your fragiles while you handle the rest with our non-fragile packing service covering books, linens and everyday goods. As a Checkatrade-verified, fully insured company carrying £10m public liability cover, we stand behind every box we pack.

What to Expect When We Pack Your Fragiles
From your first call to the moment your boxes are unpacked, our aim is to take the worry out of moving your most precious possessions. We start by understanding what you own — the dinner service that only comes out at Christmas, the mirror that has hung in the hall for thirty years, the collection on the mantelpiece — and we plan the right materials and time to protect each one. On packing day our trained crew works room by room, methodically and tidily, keeping a running note of where fragile items are boxed so nothing is mislaid. At the other end we can return to handle the careful work of unpacking too, through our full unpacking service, so your china is back in the cabinet and your pictures back on the wall without you lifting a thing.

Yes, fully insured. We’ll discuss cover for high-value pieces.
You can certainly pack fragiles yourself, but it is the area where DIY most often goes wrong because the right materials and techniques genuinely matter. If you do want to pack your own breakables, we strongly recommend using proper dish packs, glass packs and bubble wrap from our packing materials range rather than newspaper and supermarket boxes. For valuable, sentimental or particularly delicate items, professional fragile packing is the safer choice and gives you the reassurance of our full insurance cover.
We use acid-free tissue as the first layer against delicate finishes, large- and small-bubble wrap for cushioning, and cell-divided dish packs and glass packs that give every plate and glass its own compartment so items never touch. Cartons are filled to the top with packing paper to lock the contents in place. Each material is chosen for a specific job rather than improvised, which is what makes the protection reliable.
We tape a protective grid across the glass face, fit foam corner protectors, wrap the piece and slot it into a telescopic picture or mirror carton sized exactly to the frame. In the van these items travel upright on their edge against a firm surface — never laid flat — so the glass cannot flex. For especially large or valuable framed pieces we can build a bespoke case through our custom crate service.
